Storage

The demand for subsurface gas storage is increasing. Carbon sequestration is in development but is required to achieve climate targets. An issue to be addressed is the environmental impact of such methods in relation to it’s benefit for the climate. Gas storage in salt domes and depleted gas fields are standard applications. Storage in Aquifer reservoir outside known gas fields is demanding. In Switzerland there is no storage capacity to date.

The most challenging issue, however, is the safe deep disposal of radioactive waste. Switzerland is at the forefront of research and development in this area. Deep repositories must meet the requirements of safe storage for up to one million years. But they should also be designed in such a way that retrieval is possible. For example, if the waste can be used as an energy resource.
